Lightning rods are elevated metal rods that are connected to the ground by means of various conductive parts.

Types of lightning rods

Three types of lightning rods are in use today: single rods, early streamer emission rods, and Farady mesh cages comprised of many rods that cover a building’s entire roof and edges. In this last case, the tips and conductors are all connected to form a protective cage.

Use of lightning rods

The purpose of a lightning rod is not to attract lightning, but to protect a building. However, even if such rods greatly reduce lightning-induced magnetic waves, they will not protect a building’s electronic equipment.
